Transition to School

The transition to school can often be an unfamiliar journey for many families. The purpose of this information is to provide guidance to families, helping them understand the transition process and supporting them in making informed decisions about the most suitable school for their child.

A Transition Timeline

It can be difficult to know what to do and when.

Below is a suggested timeline for the lead-up to a school transition.

When your child turns four

  • Start visiting the schools you are interested in. The principals of each school are happy to show you around and talk about what they could offer your whanau.

  • Enrol your child at your chosen school. This is helpful as the schools can more accurately know how to structure their classrooms when they know how many children will be joining them throughout the year. Let us know of your decision and let us know when the transition will likely happen.

Sit back and relax

You have made your choice of school

Two months before your child starts school

  • Organise your school visits with the school. Let us know when they will be. Your child's key teacher would like to join your child on a school visit to support the transition between learning environments

One month before school

  • Book in a farewell. This is a very special ceremony to celebrate the life of your child and wish them well as they adventure off to school.
